Dreams

What dreams does your child have? Do they want to be a doctor, a pr, a mum of 6 children? Do you talk to them about their hopes and dreams and are you supportive of them? To have dreams is precious. We all need them especially children as the dreams get them through the rough times they have at school and home and no-one should be able to take them away from them. They are theirs and with your support they can become a reality.

Do you know what your child dreams of?

Great post – I think the key words here are ‘are you supportive of them?’. The more we value and support our kids’ dreams, the further they’ll go. Giving children the sense that there are no limits to what they can achieve is a great gift. Sadly studies show that more than half of all 11 year olds list ‘being famous’ as their dream. Showing kids there’s more to life than brainless stardom is also a big challenge for the modern parent!

I think it must be difficult to support your childs dream if it is to be famous but you could challenge your child and make them think about the specifics of what that would entail. If they want to be famous by singing in a band what could they do now as a small step to achieve that dream. We should encourage our children to dream and daydream about the endless possibilities and what they could achieve.

I think Karen is right. They need to have more heroes to role idol potential. Show them Ghandi and tell them about Zola Budd. Let them see what Conoleeza Rice achieved where Oprah came frOm. Let them have lots and lots of great role models to inspire their dreams.

Yes unfortunately the real role models lived in the past. Who do we use to inspire our children? As parents we can be good role models for them. At present my children dream of being a doctor and a dancer. I back them completely and we talk in detail about both. Whether they become real or not is neither here nor there. Thank you for the comment Becky.

Interesting subject!! Not sure that dreaming is really the topic or if we are actually discussing their aspirations. When my kids were younger, they “dreamed” about all kinds of things, in particular of growing up and selling sweets at the local corner store!! This obviously reflected what they enjoyed at the time and I am happy to say that their goals in life have expanded somewhat since then!! (not that selling sweets would not be cool!!)With regards to the younger generation wanting to be famous, I think this is a phase most kids go through – my son wants to be a world class footballer at the moment and strangely enough, not to be famous, but because he lives for football, so why not??!! Either way, I guess the important thing is to be open and encouraging so that the children feel safe and know that we are always here for them.

Great post Naomi! I need to talk more openly with this about my kiddos. Especially my introvert, he keeps this stuff inside him and doesn’t share much!

I love sharing my childs dreams and also getting to share mine with them. They get excited by my dreams. Thank you for your comment Chris.

Judy, thank you for your input. When I say dreams I mean aspirations – what do they hope to be doing in the future careerwise, what would be on their life list of things they want to achieve. Great comments.
