Encouraging children to use fewer words and be more concise in their communication is vital for effective interaction. It minimises any misunderstanding between them and the person they are talking to and therefore helps them have better and clearer communication. Being concise helps children express themselves more efficiently, making it easier for others to understand them the first time.

I find that children often string together long sentences and include unnecessary details when they talk. They may be talking about their day or being asked a question. It can lead to confusion by the person who is listening and they may zone out. It is much better for children to say less but keep to the point. Parents can teach children to focus on the main point to become clearer communicators. For example, instead of your child saying, ‘I was thinking that maybe we could go to the park today if you’re not too busy because it looks like a nice day,’ they  could say, ‘Can we go to the park today?’

This method, not only reduces the need for repetition but, also lowers the frustration levels for both the child and the listener. When children are misunderstood, they can become frustrated, feeling that they are not being heard. This frustration can lead to further communication breakdowns. However, when there is clear, concise communication the message is received accurately, leading to quicker responses and more satisfying interactions.

Parents Can Help With Clear Communication

Parents can help their children develop this skill by modelling good communication skills themselves and gently guiding their children to simplify their messages. Role-playing and practice can also be effective strategies as well as encouraging children to think about the most important part of their message before speaking. This can help them stay on track with their words.
