'Boundary' spelled out in wooded letters

We all want to help our friends when they find themselves in trouble, struggling, having problems, not coping with life etc. We want to be there for them and make everything much better. Children and young people want to do the same for their friends, however, they may take on their friends’ problems as if they were their own, and that may not be good for their own mental health.

Children’s empathetic nature drives them to want to support those around them, but this selflessness can sometimes lead to stress and anxiety. Adults need to recognise that while children may want to assist others, they need to prioritise their own well-being. They can do this by setting boundaries and protecting themselves from being consumed by the problems of others. They can learn to offer support and empathy without making themselves ill.

Life Coaching and Setting Boundaries

One effective way to help children navigate this balance is through life coaching. Life coaching equips children with the tools to understand the importance of self-care and the value of setting boundaries. By teaching children to recognise their own needs and limitations, life coaching empowers children to support others while still prioritising their own mental health.

Through life coaching, children learn strategies to manage their emotions and it gives them the confidence to offer support to their friends from a distance, when necessary, without feeling guilty about looking after their own well-being. This is very important if we are to help children become emotionally resilient individuals who are capable of supporting others whilst protecting their minds and bodies.
