scrabble tiles spelling 'mental health'

There has been so much in the press recently about children’s mental health and well-being.  It seems that we are finally ready to take getting help for mental health to the next level. The government tried to do this a couple of years ago by taking on a Champion to bring mental health into schools – I really hope that this happens. There are so many children that need some kind of help with talking being at the forefront and perhaps mental health and coaching could work together. Children need someone to talk to about how they feel, what they need and why they are behaving in a certain way and the New Year is a good time to start so that our children can begin to feel happier, empowered and more in control of their life.

Sometimes, parents are not the right person for a child to talk too, and that’s okay. Parents need to get used to asking for help rather than struggling. It has become more of the norm to say ‘I need help’ and you only have to look at forums to see parents sharing more stories and struggles with other parents. Putting the mental health of our children first has become more important to parents – which is great, we need to be like this.

Mental Health And Coaching Can Go Together

So if you picked up on little quirks or behaviours over the holidays that you want to nip in the bud, or you can see your child is unhappy, or you are unhappy with the way they are interacting with others (normally because they are not getting what they need/want) consider something like coaching. Coaching is becoming more mainstream and is definitely something you could try as it is a fantastic tool for children. Parents are using it as they want to seek help for their children but do not want to go down the therapy route. There is no stigma attached and coaching is actually seen a positive thing to do.

If you know that your child would love having a space of their own where they could share their feelings and gain some really useful strategies then this could be for them. Why not start the New Year off in a good place knowing that they feel good and positive about their life.
