The word 'Rules' spelled out with scrabble tiles

When teenagers refuse to follow household rules, it can be frustrating for parents. Why aren’t they doing what we ask them to do? How can they disobey you? Can’t they see why they have to do something? Why can’t we get through to them? What do they want from me?

Teenagers will always seek independence and often question authority, so how can parents encourage cooperation from their children and help their teens to follow rules and understand their importance?

Ways to Encourage Teens To Follow Rules

Firstly, parents can involve their teens in setting rules. When teens feel they have a voice, they’re more likely to understand and respect boundaries. For example, if curfews are a point of contention, parents need to sit down with them and discuss why it’s important. Explain that a curfew, such as “home by 10 pm on a weekday,” is set for safety and to ensure they’re well-rested for school. When teens understand the logic behind it, they may be more inclined to follow it. Explaining any rule will help the teen think more about why it has been set.

Secondly, discuss the benefits of mutual respect. If teens are reluctant to complete chores, for instance, remind them that everyone in the family has to contribute to the household. A rule like “clean your room weekly” teaches them organisation and responsibility. Instead of framing it as a demand, frame it as a way to show respect for shared space.

Thirdly, set consequences that are fair and consistent. Teenagers test boundaries, so it’s crucial to stay consistent with the consequences if rules are broken. For example, limiting screen time to two hours per night can encourage better time management and healthier habits. If the rule is broken, remind them calmly of the agreed consequence, such as reduced screen time the following day.

Above all, parents need to model the behaviour they want to see. When parents follow the rules themselves, they demonstrate accountability and respect. Encourage open communication and let your teen know they can discuss frustrations and concerns. By creating a safe, respectful environment and reinforcing the purpose behind household rules, parents can help their teenagers understand that rules are there to protect them, build their life skills, and foster harmony in the family. Through these efforts, we hope teens will become more receptive to following the rules and respecting boundaries.
